Matematická olympiáda je předmětová soutěž určená žákům základních a středních škol organizovaná v několika kategoriích podle ročníku. Začíná domácím kolem, pokračuje školním a podle kategorie končí okresním, krajským, popř. celostátním kolem. Z nejlepších řešitelů kategorie A určené především maturitním a předmaturitním ročníkům jsou vybíráni reprezentační týmy na Mezinárodní matematickou olympiádu a další mezinárodní soutěže. V Matematické olympiádě je kladen důraz na správný postup řešení úlohy a jeho vysvětlení. Soutěžící se tedy zdokonalují nejen v počítání, používání matematických znalostí a dovedností, analytickém myšlení, logice a systematičnosti, ale také ve vysvětlování, formulování svých myšlenek a předkládání nezpochybnitelných argumentů. Matematickou olympiádu vyhlašuje každoročně Ministerstvo školství, mládeže a tělovýchovy ČR. Organizuje ji Jednota českých matematiků a fyziků a odborným garantem je Matematický ústav Akademie věd ČR. Úlohy připravují odborníci působící na českých i zahraničních univerzitách ve spolupráci s učiteli středních a základních škol. Jde o nejstarší předmětovou soutěž v České republice: první ročník Matematické olympiády byl uspořádán v roce 1951, od té doby se koná pravidelně každý rok.

The Mathematical Olympiad is a subject competition intended for primary and secondary school pupils organized in several categories according to year. It starts with the home round, continues with the school round and, depending on the category, ends with the district, regional, or nationwide round. Representative teams for the International Mathematical Olympiad and other international competitions are selected from the best solvers of category A, intended primarily for matriculation and pre-matriculation years. In the Mathematical Olympiad, the emphasis is on the correct procedure for solving the problem and its explanation. Therefore, the contestants improve not only in calculation, use of mathematical knowledge and skills, analytical thinking, logic and systematic approach, but also in explaining, formulating their ideas and presenting indisputable arguments. The Mathematical Olympiad is announced annually by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic. It is organized by the Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists and the professional guarantor is the Mathematical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The problems are prepared by experts working at Czech and foreign universities in cooperation with secondary and elementary school teachers. It is the oldest subject competition in the Czech Republic: the first year of the Mathematical Olympiad was organized in 1951, and since then it has been held regularly every year.
